Termites are small soft busied insects, which many people call “white ants” however, though they look similar, they are not related. There are many different termite species in Malaysia, some are important recyclers of dead and decaying timber only a few cause economic damage.
Species that cause problems to properties:
- Coptotermes gestroi
- Coptotermes curvignathus
- Coptotermes havilandi
- Coptotermes kalshoveni
- Coptotermes sepangensis
- Macrotermes gilvus
- Macrotermes pakistanicus
- Globitermes sulphureus
- Schedorhinotermes sp.
- Microcerotermes sp.
These species are Coptotermes species, About 90% of property damages in Malaysia are caused by Coptotermes. They constantly forage of food resources cellulose, they primary component of wood.
Termites live and work together in large groups known as colonies. They are divided in to various groups known as: Queen, King, Soldiers, Workers and Alates. The Queen is the reproductive sources of the colony, she ensures replenishment and further growth of the colony.
King & Queen
At least one king and queen at the centre of every termite colony, the queen’s responsible for reproduce.
Some live for as long as 30 years. The Queen may lay as many as 3,000 eggs per day.
Workers are blind, wingless responsible to maintain the colony exp: Build and repair the nest and earthen shelter tubes, forage for food and taking care of members in colony.They are the most numerous caste and the most likely to be found inside infested wood.
Soldiers defend the colony against attack by predatory enemies such as ants, and are equipped with large jaws (mandibles)
These termites will eventually leave the colony as adult Swarmers “Male and females” & they shed their wings to mate if suitable environment located. They are often confused with ant swarmers.
